Gemma Gardiner
Occupational Therapist
Where are you from?
I grew up in Sheffield then moved to Salford for University and have been here ever since.
Where did you study?
Salford University which included placements in North Manchester General hospital (infectious disease ward), Community Stroke rehabilitation, Mental Health in-patient (schizophrenia), Salford Royal Intermediate Care, and a project placement which involved developing resources for students.
Where did you work previously?
I worked as a rehabilitation assistant at STEPS Rehabilitation, which is an in-patient neurorehabilitation facility. The skills I developed throughout my years as an RA have been so valuable in my transition to my OT role.
What is a typical day at MTS like for you?
It varies! For example, some days involve working with clients in order to provide strategies to increase their socialisation through graded community integration like volunteering opportunities and attending events. Other days involve working with clients to progress their mobility by assessing the most suitable equipment and adaptations, enabling them to engage in meaningful activities, such as personal care or going to the beach in Wales. The client’s unique goals are at the forefront of therapy so this brings a real variety to our day.
What’s the best thing about your role?
The best thing about my role is seeing the positive differences in client's lives by supporting and enabling purposeful activity, whether that's regaining hair and makeup skills or adapting home environments to support engagement in enjoyable activities like cooking. I really enjoy the range of my role which means I'm constantly learning, as well as working with a range of people.
What do you consider is your biggest achievement within your role?
I created a "salon evening" group, focusing on self-care, particularly nail painting. The environment was relaxing and sociable with music, chatting, and essential oils which added a sensory element, and aimed to have a confidence-boosting aspect. I liaised with other therapists to enable client's engagement, for example, a client who had a contracture who was able to wear her splint for this period of time.
